History of THE FIRST 48 In ONE Winter:
48 In One Winter is first known to have been accomplished in the Winter of 1994 / 95 by Cindy DiSanto – Cath Goodwin – Steve Martin.
Tho it wasn’t a goal they set for themselves prior to that Winter, they found themselves enjoying every outing, so much so, that they kept making plans to hike to another 4K summit following the completion of each hike. It was roughly mid-February when they realized they might be able to hike to each of the 48 summits before the end of calendar Winter that year.
Their good friend and mentor throughout was Steve Smith. Steve happened to be a co-worker of Cindy & Cath’s at a vacation resort in Lincoln. The three First-Timers became winter hiking enthusiasts because of Steve! At that time, Steve had yet to open his Map & Bookstore, or become the Editor of the White Mountain Guide, but he was already an author of a few books, and a member of The Four Thousand Footer Committee. Steve encouraged the trio, and gave them much appreciated guideance and information! He has done the same for many, many others since opening his store, The Mountain Wanderer Map & Book Store, in 1999.
